Cotton candy burritos arrived at the Worcester Public Market with a trip in the spring.
Anisa Oparaku Sbat and her husband, Majd Sbat, visited the market in the Canal District in the spring around the time it opened and before the pandemic. The experience, being surrounded by entrepreneurs under one roof, inspired the couple to chase their dream of opening a candy shop.
Months later, in September, The Sweet Life debuted at the public market, featuring one of the most popular items in the Canal District, the cotton candy burrito.
“The whole journey itself was very exciting,” Oparaku Sbat said. “To know that we had a dream and we just didn’t continue dreaming it, but we decided to go for it.”
The Sweet Life offers hand-crafted chocolates, that look more like pieces of art than edible, candy by the pound, such as M&Ms, Mike and Ikes and Skittles, as well as the cotton candy burrito.
Oparaku Sbat said the burrito has been one of the most popular items at the shop, located just inside the parking lot entrance of the Worcester Public Market.
The burrito wraps a selection of ice cream, cereal and candy around two pieces of cotton candy. The ice cream varieties include vanilla, strawberry, cookies and cream and snickers. Cereal options are Trix, Lucky Charms, Fruit Loops, and Fruity Pebbles. A host of candy options exist, but Oparaku Sbat said the most popular are gummy worms and bears.
“Surprisingly, it’s not as sweet as it sounds,” Oparaku Sbat said. “When I tried it I thought it would be sweet, but it’s actually so good.”
The cotton candy doesn’t add much flavor but acts as a vehicle to hold the ice cream and toppings. In many ways, the cotton candy acts as a substitute for an ice cream cone. The cotton candy wrap allows ice cream lovers to add more toppings to their handheld dessert.
Oparaku Sbat and her husband stumbled onto the idea when searching for ways to create cotton candy shapes.
“We went for it and it’s been a great hit,” Oparaku Sbat said.
Customers have driven for as much as an hour to try the burritos, Oparaku Sbat said.
They are large enough to split between at least two people and take about seven minutes to make as the cotton candy is made from scratch.
They can be purchased for takeout as the public market has limited seating during the winter and amid the pandemic.
Since opening in September, Oparaku Sbat said sales at the market can be sporadic but picked up during the holidays, especially for the chocolates.
The Sweet Life offers 30 truffles in boxes of eight to 24 pieces. They also can be purchased in boxes of four or six that can attach to the top of a bottle of wine.
“This is our heart and soul,” Oparaku Sbat said.
There were nights leading up to the opening at the market where the couple didn’t sleep much. But as the months passed and The Sweet Life is now a mainstay in the Canal District, the nerves evolved to happiness.
“That’s the most rewarding part,” Oparaku Sbat said. “Seeing it at the market and running. Getting responses from people about how much they like the chocolate. Getting that positive feedback has made it all worth it.”
