Loveland is taking another step toward winter, with single-digit temperatures and snow on the near horizon.
The National Weather Service has put Larimer County under a winter storm watch from Sunday morning until Monday morning, with a possibility of heavy snow in the forecast.
Lower elevations including Loveland can expect 5 to 10 inches of snow, while the foothills and mountains could get 6-12 inches, according to the forecast.
Saturday’s high in Loveland is expected to get to 60 before the temperature plummets. Saturday night’s low could hit 15, Sunday’s high will rise only to 20, and the low Sunday night might be 6 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Monday’s not much better, with a forecast high of 22 and a low that night of 10.
“Tomorrow looks to be, other than the fact that we have the fire, decent weather,” said Joe Grim, meteorologist with the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, in reference to Saturday’s weather. “Tomorrow evening, probably a little after sunset, the cold front is supposed to come through. Sometime during the night it is supposed to start snowing.”
Evan Direnzo, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said along with the snow, temperatures in the single digits are expected going into next week. The anticipated cold weather, wind chills and snow caused the Weather Service to issue the winter storm watch for Larimer County.
“We think a lot about the impacts the weather will have on the public when we put out these warnings,” Direnzo said.
Direnzo said while it is a bit early for this much snow in the state, it is common for cold, wintry weather to hit Colorado around this time.
“It is not unheard of in Colorado history to have winter storms in October,” Direnzo said.
