As a token of appreciation to students for keeping COVID-19 numbers low this half of the semester, Bradley’s office of student affairs passed out a Halloween themed treat to students this past Wednesday. Most students who walked by Olin Hall received a Rice Krispie treat, either white or orange, in the shape of the Bradley B.

At the time of the event, the weekly positivity rate was 1.45 percent, and cases have decreased significantly since the spike in mid-September.

“We recognize how difficult this semester has been,” Nathan Thomas, vice president of student affairs, said. “Our students have been really fantastic through it all, and so this is just a simple way to say, ‘Thank you, thanks for persevering, and we are concerned and worried about you as well.’”

Thomas also expressed his satisfaction with how the semester is going in regards to controlling COVID-19 positivity rates, but also that students should keep up with the progress.

“We still have to be cognizant of what’s going on, but there are a lot of people that have said, especially in September when things were really struggling, that ‘we wouldn’t make it to the end of October,’ and here we are,” Thomas said. “So kudos to our students for really stepping up and heeding this and taking this seriously but also making something out of a very difficult situation, too.”

Students felt that this was a nice way for the university to show their appreciation.

“I like it. It was something new,” freshman Brett Hester said. “It shows that they care that we are doing good.”

While many appreciate the treats, some are wondering if there could be more in store for keeping up the progress.

“I like that it’s in the shape of a B,” Samantha Powers, freshman nursing major, said. “If you’re giving [students] something to work for, then there could be bigger gifts in the future if we come on keeping the numbers low.”

Although the numbers have gone down, Thomas said that students should keep practicing the COVID-19 guidelines.

“It’s been pretty consistent [that] where we’ve seen COVID spread is where those practices aren’t in place, and while it is easy to let down our guard, the fundamental stuff we know and talk about since June and March are things that have to still be in place today, too,” Thomas said.
