Sugary Sweet Bakery, located at 119 E. Elm St. in Granville, is truly a family business, with several generations pitching in.

The bakery opened approximately six weeks ago, doing so when most businesses were recently ordered shutdown over COVID-19 concerns.

Owner Kathy Budreu said she was actually encouraged by county health officials to open as an “essential business” and one they said that Granville residents facing closed restaurants would likely appreciate.

The decision to open despite the pandemic, she says, proved a good one, and business has been steady these first few weeks.

Kathy’s family helps in various capacities, including daughter Brittany, who was making a fresh batch of doughnuts early on a Wednesday afternoon, husband Scott, son Carter, and Kathy’s mother, Sally Deckard, whose personal recipes are featured in many offerings, including the shop’s extremely popular cream puffs.

Kathy is a Granville native, who graduated from Granville High School, and whose father owned several houses in the village, she said.

She tried an earlier baking enterprise, in Fairfield County, she said, but noted the timing wasn’t right: “The whole Buckeye Dam thing was just going bad at the time,” she explained.

Coming back to Granville has been like coming home.

“The community has been very supportive,” Kathy said. “We’re really blessed. I love Granville. Always have. It’s always been home to me.”

Customers can come in to make their selections, or, “We take things out to people in the parking lot, if they want, just to make them feel safe. The community has been really understanding and supportive,” Kathy said.

All of the items for sale, from cupcakes, to pies, to cakes, and other baked goods are made in house, and many “use a lot of my mom’s recipes,” Kathy said. “She’s definitely part of this. She comes in and bakes with us. She’s 76, and so we’re careful.”

Among those family recipes is mother Sally’s cream puffs, which are a popular staple at the bakery already. Pies and cheesecakes (four varieties of the latter were available on June 3) are also favorite choices.

Churros are the most popular of the doughnut choices, as Brittany told a first-time customer trying to choose which doughnuts to order.

At the same time, Brittany stressed there is a constant infusion of new items: “We try to do something new for everybody, every week,” she said. “We switch it up to give it a variety.” She added, “We make sure everything is fresh. Fresh is important. We want things to be really good and for (customers) to come back.”

The bakery has also been handling some big orders recently, tied to pandemic-era graduations and weddings, including calls for 500 cookies, 24 pies and two wedding cakes.

Another popular item? “Vegas cakes.” These were inspired by something seen on a vacation: “Little tiny cakes we saw there and so we started making them,” Kathy said.

Sweet and Sugary Bakery is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
