CLEARWATER, Fla. — A fifth-grader at McMullen Booth Elementary School in Clearwater got a special surprise Tuesday during a Veterans Day presentation.
10-year-old Cailani Martinez had not seen her dad for nearly nine months since he was deployed to Iraq, so when he walked in during the assembly, she couldn’t believe her eyes.
“One of the best hugs ever. It doesn’t get any better than that,” said Army serviceman Cedric Goins, Cailani’s dad.
“I just love him and he’s one of my favorite people in the whole world,” said Cailani.
Students on the stage cheered as the two hugged.
Goins said being away from family during birthdays, holidays and the first day of school is hard.
“My heart is racing right now, because that’s my baby girl,” he said before he was announced to come from backstage. “And I’m just ready to see her.”
