ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Wake Forest 2-0 on Friday (Nov. 19) at U-M Soccer Stadium in a second-round NCAA Tournament match.

The win propels the Wolverines to the Sweet 16 and a matchup with No. 6 Tennessee on Sunday (Nov. 21) at 1 p.m. inside U-M Soccer Stadium.

Wake Forest (16-6-0) started the match fast and put Michigan (17-3-3) on its heels with five corner kicks in the opening five minutes of action.

U-M's second shot of the night resulted in a goal in the 14th minute. Freshman Avery Kalitta played a pristine ball to senior Meredith Haakenson on the right-wing just inside the 18. She then sent a ball to the top of the six intended for junior Dani Wolfe, but her service deflected off a Wake Forest defender to result in an own goal and gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

After the first 45 minutes, Wake Forest led most categories with the exception of the score. The Wolverines trailed 5-3 in shots, and in corners 5-0.

U-M doubled its lead in the 66th minute thanks to stellar ball skills by senior Nicki Hernandez, who split a pair of defenders just inside the box and went down and a penalty kick was awarded. Haakenson then stepped up to the spot and slotted home the kick and U-M was off to a 2-0 advantage.

In the 78th minute, Wake Forest's Giovanna DeMarco was sent off with her second yellow card of the match, bringing the Demon Deacons down to 10 field players. From there, U-M tightened the screws, led by senior goalkeeper Hillary Beall who had four stops for her eighth clean sheet of the season.

Tweet of the Match:

Wake Forest nearly doubled up U-M in shots at 15-8, and had four shots on goal to a trio for the Wolverines. U-M was also flagged for seven offsides. Haakenson and senior Sarah Stratigakis led the effort with two shots apiece.

U-M improves to 13-1 in NCAA Tournament matches contested in Ann Arbor, and is 11-1-1 on the 2021 season at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines are 13-0-1 this season when leading at the half, 13-1-1 when scoring the first goal in a contest, and 14-2-3 against unranked opponents.
