More than 50 people attended a Cranes and Cocoa event Saturday afternoon at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. After refreshments and socializing outside the Visitors Center, about 30 people took the driving tour to one of the refuge’s roosting places for sandhill cranes, with more than 10,000 birds at Bitter Lake this year as of the last count on Nov. 24. The migratory birds typically spend fall and winter at the refuge. Volunteer Jim Montgomery of Santa Fe has been giving the annual presentation about cranes at Bitter Lake for more than 10 years. He answered people’s questions at the Visitors Center and at the roosting site. “We are excited to see people getting outside and enjoying nature,” said Refuge Manager Lindsey Landowski. The Visitors Center with its exhibits isn’t expected to reopen until early 2022, although the gift shop is open. People also can walk the trails or take the wildlife auto tour.
