After a four-year hiatus, Sweet Briar College is excited to announce the return of softball to the College’s varsity athletics offerings with a full NCAA Division III schedule of competition set for the spring of 2023.
Sweet Briar plans to hire a head coach during the summer of 2021, who will begin the recruiting process during the 2021-22 academic year. Formal varsity competition is planned to begin in the spring of 2023, with the intention to participate in scrimmage competition in the spring of 2022.
With Sweet Briar reintroducing softball to its varsity athletics offerings, the total number of varsity teams at Sweet Briar rises to 10, while increasing the total number of NCAA Division III squads to eight at the College.
The Vixens last competed in softball on April 22, 2017, in a road doubleheader at Guilford, with the last home twinbill taking place on April 11, 2017, against Randolph-Macon.
Now, the Vixens will return to the diamond in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. With the departure of Emory & Henry for the South Atlantic Conference (NCAA Division II) in the fall of 2021 and the addition of Averett to the ODAC in the fall of 2022, Sweet Briar will join the ODAC as the 12th softball program in the conference.
