HORTON, MI -- Kent and Tahny Lowry have stumbled on a unique business plan.
The couple started Lowry’s Little Flock Farm near Horton about four years ago as a hobby farm. To make the farm sustainable, they found making alpaca products to sell was the way to go.
And then Tahny added a bakery case.
“I don’t think that this one would work without the other,” Tahny said. “If we just randomly had alpaca products, so what? But we have the animals, the alpacas themselves, so they see it and they think it’s neat.”
Tahny was a caterer for 20 years and learned baking from her mother. She’s careful about her ingredients and offers some gluten-free and vegan bakery items. She uses the fresh eggs from the farm in her baking.
“I always have the philosophy, ‘Would I eat it?,” she said.
Popular items from the bakery case include almond croissants and animal sugar cookies. Rice pudding and cinnamon rolls are also top sellers.
“It’s like if grandma was in the kitchen and here are all of grandma’s desserts,” Tahny said.
During the start of the coronavirus pandemic, she started a business called Sweet Treats where she would sell boxes of treats in a drive-thru. It took off and evolved into the bakery case at the farm.
Animals on the farm to visit include alpacas, goats, a pig, chickens, donkeys, llamas and many others. A new animal to the farm this weekend is a yak. People are encouraged to bring treats for the animals on their visits.
Alpaca products include socks, hats, and other clothing items. (Check out the photos to see inside the shop.)
Lowry’s Little Flock Farm, 12201 Sutfin Road near Horton, has the bakery case open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday or until items run out. It is closed Easter Sunday, April 4. Call 517-262-5867. For more information and any special hours visit https://www.facebook.com/fiberwoolfarm.
