Sure, there are all those feel-good local news stories about how the pandemic has “brought out the best in people,” and while that may be the case sometimes, a lot of people are still feeling pretty bitter about the whole thing. If you’ve shared your bitterness on Twitter, you may have gained (or lost) a few followers, but more importantly, you may have gotten yourself some free beer. Here’s what to know.

How to get free beer

The process is pretty straightforward. First, head to IBU-O-METER.com and submit your Twitter handle. Then, Hop Valley Brewing Company (who is sponsoring this giveaway) will generate an IBU (that would be Internet Bitterness Units here) score based on how bitter you’ve been on Twitter lately.

But regardless of your score, you’ll receive a rebate for a free 12-pack of one of four varieties of Hop Valley’s IPAs (which, for context, are supposed to be less bitter than regularly IPAs). If you’re not familiar with the brand, you can use this beer finder tool to locate a place in your area that sells it.

Basically, you purchase a 12-pack of the beer, and then submit your receipt of Hop Valley for reimbursement, which will be made through PayPal or Venmo. Beer purchases must be made between now and May 31, 2021, and your receipt must be submitted by June 7, 2021.

How, exactly, are your tweets assessed for bitterness?

So, who—or what—is judging your levels of bitterness? Here’s an explanation from an email from Hop Valley Brewing Company to Lifehacker:

In technical terms, by using a complex Machine Learning algorithm, we’re able to analyze the text found in your Tweets and detect the overall sentiment (positive, negative or neutral) based on a pre-trained set of historical data. The IBU-O-Meter then assigns a score (0-100) based on the ratio of positive and negative tweets total (maximum of 100). In not-so technical terms, you submit your handle, computer magic happens and evaluates your tweets then assigns you an IBU score.

The fine print

Obviously, you need to be at least 21 years of age in order to participate, and there is a limit of one rebate per phone number. Here are the rest of the terms and conditions. Some states have slightly different rules, so you may want to check these out.
