Rushmore woman creates sweets and treats that are just the 'bomb' | The Globe - The Globe

Homemade Sweets & Treats by Lisa had its community debut on Saturday with delectable samples offered during a taste testing event at The Stag in downtown Worthington.

The clothing shop has a variety of the treats on hand, and is also where customers can place or pick up their special orders with the rural Rushmore woman.

Schutte’s obsession with cocoa bombs began in mid-December, when she learned of the Hacky Sack-sized chocolate balls filled with miniature marshmallows, chocolate powder and assorted flavorings.

“I looked on Pinterest and thought it would be something our family could do at Christmas,” said Schutte, adding that she ordered some molds online and, because of backorders — a sign of the obvious cocoa bomb craze — didn’t get them until after the holiday.

Once the molds arrived, she began experimenting with different flavors, and then started telling her friends about the concoctions she was making in the kitchen.

“Within a week, I had people ordering them for New Year’s Eve,” she shared. “It pretty much went from researching, to this could be a fun little hobby, to a small business in two weeks.

“It just kind of literally exploded.”

Kind of like the mega cocoa bombs themselves.

One places a single bomb in the bottom of a mug, pours 10 to 12 ounces of hot milk overtop and watches as the bomb begins to melt away. Pretty soon, the cocoa bomb flips over and opens, revealing a display of miniature marshmallows, cocoa powder and secret ingredients. Just give it a stir and start to sip — it’s that easy.

Schutte is quick to point out that making the bombs requires a seven-step process. It’s a lot of "putzy" work that some people just don’t have the patience for.

“I do enjoy putzing with little projects,” Schutte said, adding that she enjoys being crafty and creative.

Since beginning her cocoa bomb concocting, Schutte has settled on a dozen different flavors. There’s plain hot chocolate, of course, along with the flavors of red velvet, peppermint, caramel toffee macchiato, dark chocolate mint, dark chocolate raspberry, strawberry swirl, salted caramel, cookies & cream, French vanilla, hazelnut and sugar cookie. Both the strawberry and raspberry renditions feature dehydrated fruit, she noted.

Once word began to spread about her mega cocoa bombs, Schutte began getting requests for other items. Quickly, she expanded her offerings to cake bites, cake pops, truffles, pretzel rods dipped in a sugary sweet coating, popcorn balls and something she calls Crack Popcorn, which combines sweet and salt and — according to customers — is impossible to resist.

Thus far, Schutte has made more than 600 mega cocoa bombs.

“And I don’t really even like chocolate,” she said. “Now I order it 150 pounds at a time.”

Schutte buys real chocolate in wafer form, melting it to create the cocoa bombs and the coating that surrounds her cake bombs and cake pops.

“I’ve found there are a lot of differences in chocolate and I use high quality chocolate,” she added.

While it may be easy to resist the temptation of the sweet treats, Schutte hasn’t been able to resist requests for special orders. She’s already booked to make cake pops for some graduation parties, baby showers and wedding showers.

All of those orders require extra help, and Schutte’s already called on her husband, sister and friends to help her. In fact, Schutte teamed up with Robyn Moser in applying for a cottage law license through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, which allows them to sell the homemade treats.

“It takes a team, at this point, to do it,” Schutte said. “It’s been fun — it’s just nothing I’ve ever thought would blossom into a small business.”

Willing to ship orders farther distances, in just the last month Schutte has mailed treats to customers in 13 states and also shipped samples to three past exchange students in foreign countries.

“I guess everybody likes chocolate and sweets,” she said.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, Schutte is offering gift baskets and will personalize orders for people. To place an order, stop in at The Stag, 412 10th St., Worthington, or go to Homemade Sweets & Treats by Lisa on Facebook.
