CLEVELAND, Ohio — Despite a few big snow storms, it’s been a relatively mild winter in Northeast Ohio.
That’s about to end, says National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Saunders: “It’s not going to be mild next week.”
Extremely cold temperatures are in the forecast as arctic air, courtesy of the polar vortex, moves into the region on Sunday. The high temperature on Sunday is expected to top out at about 19 degrees.
That’s the good news. By Sunday night, temps will drop to about 2 degrees in Cleveland, according to the National Weather Service. Akron will be even colder, with lows around 0. And some areas more inland from Lake Erie could see temps drop below zero overnight, Saunders says.
As an added bonus, there will be some steady winds as well, with gusts possibly reaching 20 mph. With wind chill, it might feel like it’s -15 to -20 degrees.
And it’s not going to be a one-day event. Currently, the forecast is calling for Monday’s high in Cleveland to be 10 degrees and 11 degrees in Akron. Saunders says the extreme cold likely will continue well into next week, although it’s too early to predict exact temperatures.
The reason this is happening? According to the NWS, the polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding the North pole. Sometimes during the winter it becomes less stable and expands, allowing Arctic air to move south with the jet stream, bringing its bone-chilling temperatures with it.
Not just bone-chilling, but potentially dangerous. According to the Weather Service, with single-digit temperatures and winds at about 15 mph, there is a risk of frostbite after about 10 minutes of exposure.
Perhaps one bright spot is that although there are chances of snow showers on Sunday, forecasts currently are not calling for much accumulation. And the extreme cold likely will cause the lake to freeze, reducing chances of lake-effect snow.
