MASSAC COUNTY - (WSIL) -- Massac County Girl's Volleyball program had an impressive post season run. They reached the sweet sixteen for the first time in program history. Following IHSA return to play guidelines they were in the gym to get some conditioning in and get ready for this season.
"It’s really great seeing my friends again and history of five seniors who were going to build a bunch of chemistry with and we have a new setter in the running so we’re excited to get that going we’re going to build off of last year’s winning season."
"We lost a lot of our key players last year, but we have a really good group of seniors and a lot of good people incoming freshmen and underclassmen that are willing to step up to the plate and fill some of those spots along with the five seniors that we have this year. I think we should have a really good team and be ready for the fall."
"Just coming out of the quarantine you feel that weight of inactivity and I just in getting back in the gym, I don’t think they really have expectations. The weight is kind a lifted off of them, off their shoulders and now they can get back in the gym and exercise and there might be a little light at the end of the tunnel as far as getting to complete their senior year and a lot of them missed out on their junior season that softball season. I definitely see a lot of smiles on their faces."
Glancing at the history books, it doesn’t take long to see the programs success over the years.
"I am so blessed and so fortunate to be at Massac County with just such great athlete families athletic families. We’ve had a lot of success here in the past decade, but I think every team that we have had the past nine years has hit 30 wins we have averaged 30 wins over the past decade so maintaining that level of success for anybody is a little intimidating, but I don’t hear them talk about it. I think they know it. They feel it, but they enjoy the relationships. They enjoy coming together and working hard and trying to reach their fullest potential."
For the 5 seniors a focus will be to preserve the legacy of this strong program.
"We all have really good chemistry, but we just have to put it into the other girls, the younger girls. That’s Massac volleyball future. I mean we just have to keep building them up and keep them strong too."
"I feel like as the five seniors we’re gonna have to really work hard and help encourage the underclassmen. Especially after having this long break of not really bonding together, we’re gonna have to really come in here and work hard and form those connections. I mean we’re working out right now forming those connections, but whenever they let us finally touch of all that’s not all of it will really start."
"It’s not just me. I have really good teammates and they are really supportive of me. We’re all really supportive of each other, so I think when you have younger girls come in, it can be really scary to play with the older girls. I feel like we are all really nice to each other and we’re really easy to play with.
Despite the history of success here, Head Coach Zach Miller says winning isn’t the only way to measure the season.
"We don’t want to focus too much on an end game," said Miller. "I just tell the girls my goal is as a coach, I just want to see them reach their full potential. If they play to their fullest potential, to the best of their ability on that last day, I’m gonna be really happy with wherever they end up because again I enjoy the process. I love practice, I love summer time I love watching them just age and mature and grow into adults and just to watch their journey and putting an end or finish line on that I think is unfair. I just want them to reach their fullest potential."
I would say one of the things I enjoy most about my job again I teach seventh grade science but I coach junior high volleyball and high school volleyball. So if a girl choose if she wants to compete with volleyball for the most part I’m gonna be there coach or around her career for six years so that’s a long period of time so watching them growing in their athleticism and leader ship just from one year to the next over the course of six years Which is over a third of their life I get to watch them become the people they are going to be and I think that’s the thing I value most about coaching and watching them try to find tune this thing for the season has been so special but I feel like they do it through relationships and treating each other right and working hard and being goal oriented but Friend oriented first
I am so blessed and so fortunate to be a mass our county with just such great athlete families athletic families we’ve had a lot of success here in the past decade but I think every team that we have had the past nine years has hit 30 wins we have averaged 30 wins over the past decade so maintaining that level of success for anybody is a little intimidating but I don’t hear them talk about it I think they know it They feel it but they enjoy the relationships they enjoy coming together and working hard and trying to reach their fullest potential
