It may have been 105 degrees in south Texas, but the temperature was no match for the warm heart of Cudahy’s sweetheart, Jennifer Clark.

Known for her many acts of kindness in the community and abroad, Clark, owner of Jen’s Sweet Treats, braved the hot temperatures to visit her brother in San Antonio in July. While there, she borrowed his kitchen to bake cupcakes for fallen McAllen, Texas, Police Officers Ismael Chavez Jr. and Edelmiro Garza Jr.

“This was my toughest cupcake love delivery,” Clark said. “It was very, very moving, and it was so fresh when I was there, as it wasn’t even a week before that it happened.”

Chavez and Garza were shot and killed while answering a domestic disturbance call on July 11, Clark said.

Two police cruisers were decorated in their memory outside the department. But that sweet memorial wasn’t enough for one trip for Clark who also baked cupcakes before  her flight and kept them in her carry-on.

After she landed in Austin, Clark delivered the cupcakes to the San Marcos Police Department in honor of fallen Officer Justin Putnam, on her way to San Antonio. Putnam was shot and killed in April while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

More trips, past and future

Two weeks before the Texas trip, Clark flew to Las Vegas to honor another fallen officer and also visited Toledo, Ohio, for the same reason.

Clark said the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t really slowed her down, as she already has more trips planned. From Aug. 9-12, Clark plans to take a road trip with her fiancĂ©e through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas honoring a number of fallen officers.

Clark is also planning a trip with her friend to Colorado in mid-September to honor a paramedic who died of COVID-19. Later that month, Clark plans to fly to Los Angeles to honor another fallen officer.

One place Clark also hopes to visit is Minneapolis, the city where George Floyd lost his life. Because of the current climate in that area, Clark said she’s working to get a connection there before she’ll commit to going.

Supporting police

Clark isn’t quiet about her support for police departments, but said she has been getting some flack for supporting law enforcement.

“Police officers just need to be allowed to do their job,” she said. “Give them the respect they deserve. There are a few bad people in every profession but the good far outweighs the bad.”

Clark said during the stay-at-home order this spring, people weren’t really having parties, which did affect her business a bit. That's turning around now, as people are starting to come in regularly again, she said.
