Medalist Anna Kramer of Spring Lake, 2018 champion Kerri Parks of Flushing and high school senior Ariel Chang of Macomb Township, who has already won two GAM championships this year, headline the players who have reached the Sweet 16 of the Michigan Women’s Amateur Golf Championship.

Kramer, who has been the stroke play medalist for two straight years, will face high school sophomore Kate Brody of Grand Blanc in the Sweet 16 after beating Anci Dy of Traverse City 5 and 4 Monday in the opening round of match play at Forest Akers West in East Lansing.

Kramer, who plays at the University of Indianapolis, will play Brody during the first match out in the Sweet 16 at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Parks, who plays at Marshall University and won this year’s West Virginia women’s amateur, will play Clarkston’s Danielle Staskowski at 9:10 a.m. in the final match of the Sweet 16. Parks beat Novi’s Alexa Hatz 2-1.

Chang, winner of this year’s GAM Kickoff Challenge and Girls State Amateur, will play Kimberly Dinh of Midland at 8:20. Chang knocked off Kendall Payne of Livonia 5-4.

The most notable player to lose in the first round was Staci Slobodnik-Stoll of Haslett, a 19-time GAM champion who coaches Michigan State’s women’s team. Slobodnik-Stoll, last year’s women’s am runner-up, lost 3-2 to Natalie Samdal of Caledonia.

“My parents actually went to high school with Stacy so we kind of had a little fun connecting there and that definitely helped the mood,” said Samdal, 19. “It helped that I played against Joan Garety (another Michigan Golf Hall of Famer) a few weeks ago. I just went with the same mindset and tried to play it as just another match.

“Golf is different for every person.”

Macomb’s Lauren Timpf, 13, also reached the Sweet 16 after beating Sydney Martens of Washington 3-2. Timpf will play Samdal in the Sweet 16 round.

There will be two matches Tuesday before the field is paired to four players for the semifinals Wednesday morning. The championship match will be Wednesday afternoon, weather permitting.

Results of all matches and complete Sweet 16 pairings can be found on the GAM website.
