Bitterly cold temperatures driven by Arctic air is expected to return to Connecticut later this week, according to the National Weather Service.
After sunny skies and temperatures rising to the upper 30s to low 40s over the next few days, extreme cold is expected to return Friday night, the weather service said.
The coldest air is expected to impact Litchfield County as well as parts of New York state, Massachusetts and Vermont. Wind chill values could drop as low as 15 below zero beginning Friday night, the weather service said.
For the rest of the state, temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits Friday night and rise only into the teens on Saturday, the weather service said.
“The combination of cold temperatures and winds could result in dangerous conditions,” the weather service said in a bulletin Wednesday morning.
A coastal winter storm could also impact the Northeast early next week, “however, the exact track, precipitation type, and therefore any impacts from this storm remain highly uncertain at this time,” the bulletin said.
The weather service has already said snow is “likely” in some parts of Connecticut Sunday night into Monday. Areas along the coast have a 50 to 60 percent chance of precipitation Sunday night, with lower percentages farther inland. Snow or rain is also possible Monday when temperatures are expected to rise to around 40 degrees.
