Not Quite as Cold Wednesday... But Turning Breezy
Tonight’s Forecast Low: -19F / Wednesday’s Forecast High: 12F…
The low Tuesday morning at the La Crosse airport was -17F, marking the coldest temp recorded in La Crosse so far this winter. Even with abundant sunshine today, high temps barely climbed above zero in La Crosse and some spots didn’t even escape negative numbers.
ALERT NIGHT: It will be just as cold, if not a couple degrees colder overnight tonight into Wednesday morning. Expect lows in the -15F to -22F range for most, with some isolated colder readings in places like Black River Falls. I’m forecast a low of -19F in La Crosse and would be the coldest night so far this winter… and it would also mark the 5th night this month with lows in the -10s.
NW winds around 5-15 mph this evening, will decrease overnight to around 5 mph or less as they shift around to the S/SE. Even so, just a 5-mph breeze could still push wind chills into the -20F to -40F range at times… so WIND CHILL ADVISORIES and WARNINGS are in effect through Noon Wednesday.
Not quite as cold on Wednesday with sunny to partly cloudy skies. Expect highs in the low-mid teens, but winds will also increase from the south during the afternoon and evening. This will make it feel colder and it could also cause some blowing snow, especially in open areas and across higher terrain.
A weak disturbance will drop a cold front south across the region Wednesday night into Thursday with a small chance of light snow showers or flurries in spots. South winds Wednesday night will actually cause temps to rise into the upper teens to low 20s by morning, with highs on Thursday in the mid-upper 20s.
Colder again Thursday night through Saturday morning, but not as cold as this current cold snap. Expect highs on Friday around 10F, with mostly sunny skies. Lows Thursday and Friday nights will mainly be in the -0s, perhaps some -10s in traditional colder spots north and east.
Looking Ahead… Partly sunny and dry for the weekend, with highs generally in the upper teens to low 20s. Partly sunny and warmer Monday with highs in the upper 20s. Warmer to start the month of February, with highs in the 30s… but with the warmer air could come a storm system with a chance of rain or snow. That’s about a week away, so be sure to stay tuned for updates!
Be prepared for the cold again tonight and Wednesday morning… and have a good night! -Bill Graul
