The team which ended the Fall II season atop the Eastern Mass. Sweet 16 poll begins the 2021 season in the same spot.

There is no question that Catholic Memorial clearly belongs atop the heap. A quick look at the roster shows the Knights are loaded with high-end future Div. 1 college talent. It won’t be a cakewalk defending their Catholic Conference title as two teams in the top six (Xaverian and St. John’s Prep) will give them a run.

Everett rolled through the shortened Fall II schedule and will be a factor in the hunt for the Div. 1 crown along with Central Catholic. Mansfield and Lincoln-Sudbury should be the toughest challenges to Catholic Memorial in the Div. 2 postseason as the Knights opted to move up from Div. 3 to Div. 2 rather than going up to Div. 1.

1. Catholic Memorial (4-0, Fall II record): The defending Catholic Conference champions have more than enough to defend their title. The Knights return linemen Tim Bruen, Ed Ellis and Tom Crean along with tight end Boubacar Traore, and running backs Carson Harwood, Datrell Jones and Kyle King. JC Petrongolo is back at quarterback after going down with an injury in the season opener. On the defensive side of the ball, Catholic Memorial will feature Traore and T.J. Roberson upfront, King and Brady McGowan at linebacker, while Max Tucker, Devin Marshall and David Afogho are in the secondary.

2. Xaverian (5-1): The Hawks nearly defeated Catholic Memorial last year and could have one of the best lines around with Jack Funke, Jon Mould, Christian Gurney and Cole Canty back. Joe Kelcourse and Michael Oates return to the backfield, while Carlo Crochetti and Jonathan Monteiro will be the top receivers. On defense, the Hawks have Aiden Lovelace and Matt DeFeo on the line, Cole Jette, Jeff Prophete and Kelcourse at linebacker and Anthony Busa, Caleb Bell, Charlie Comella, Jonathan Grinion in the secondary.

3. Everett (3-0): The Crimson Tide will be one of the more experienced teams with several returning starters on both sides of the ball. All-Scholastics Ish Zamor (WR) and Jayden Clerveaux (RB) headline an offense which also has linemen Jayden Biggi, Nick Raymond, David Macharia and Hector Guevara, running backs Cam Moahmed and Brian Gibbs and wide receiver Syeed Gibbs back. On defense, Jaylen Murphy, Marcus Scott and Biggi return up front along with linebackers Juan Arroyave and Darrion Green, and defensive backs Moses Seide, Gibbs and Zamor.

4. Central Catholic (7-0): The Raiders return two of the premier skill position players in the state in two-time All-Scholastic quarterback Ayden Pereira and heavily recruited tight end Preston Zinter. There is depth in the skill positions as Justice McGrail, Kolten Williams, Jeff Goguen and Andrew Lesofsky are back at wide receiver along with running backs Mathias Latham, Mike Brown and Nathael Achuo, as well as linemen Ryan Hebert and Mathew St. Hilaire. On defense, the Raiders have Brown at nose tackle, Achuo, Zinter and Sean Mercuri at linebacker and McGrail, Williams, Lesofsky, Goguen and Latham in the secondary.

5. St. John’s Prep (3-4): The Eagles struggled a bit during the Fall II campaign but that should change as coach Brian St. Pierre has plenty of weapons back. All-Scholastic running back James Guy, a deep receiving corps led by Jackson Delaney, Jesse Ofurie and Stephon Patrick, quarterbacks Jack Perry and Victor Harrington along with linemen Jacob Cuddire and Kyle Webster ensure that points won’t be at a premium. St. John’s Prep should be strong in the back seven as linebackers Conan Keefe, Charlie Stark and Dylan Wodarski, and defensive backs Matt Mitchell, Ryan Greiner, Lucas Verrier and Tyee Ambrosh all started last year.

6. Lincoln-Sudbury (7-0): Undefeated Dual County League champions return quarterback Riley O’Connell, wide receivers Nolan O’Brien and Nate Allor and linemen Ben Smith, August Reardon and Will Rutherford. On defense, the Warriors have linebackers Bobby Haarde and Evan Munuz, defensive back/kicker Tyler Rosenberg and linemen Lamar Beaton and Desmond Gordon back.

7. Andover (5-2): The Golden Warriors return the dynamic duo of running back Lincoln Beal and quarterback Scott Brown. Jason Osborne, Luke Newton and Danny Hunter return on the offensive line, while the receiving trio is keyed by P.J. Reming, Andrew Wetterwand and Andrew Wright. Beal and Newton will play linebacker with Brown, Reming and T.J. Acheson in the secondary and Osborne Hunter on the defensive line.

8. Mansfield (6-0): The strength of this team will be in the lines as Mark DeGirolamo and Jepthe Jean are two-way starters, Joe Forte and Jimmy Gilleran are returning offensive linemen, and Braeden Veno is on the DL. The linebacking corps features Zander Holmes, James Fichera and Rocco Scarpellini, while Trevor Foley and Ryan DeGirolamo are in the secondary. Dana Johnson started at receiver.

9. Duxbury (3-0): The Dragons should be able to put points on the board as quarterback Matt Festa, running back James Anderson and wide receivers Brady Madigan, Bowman Rhinesmith and Matt Ciesielski will benefit from an offensive line led by Delby Lemeiux, Tindell Frick and Nick Ayres. Campbell Pang and Brendan Bonner are back in the secondary along with linebackers Devin Tobey and Ted Massingham and lineman Peter Stanwood.

10. Barnstable (3-0): Fourteen starters return for the Red Raiders. Eugene Jordan, Gibson Guimond and Ayden Edwards are back at running back, Pat O’Neil and Colin Fay are the tight ends and Brian Silva, Will Robke and Luke Borges are the linemen. Colby Myrbeck returns at defensive end, Ashbery Cheron and Adam Laber are the linebackers and John Stanley is back at one corner.

11. Marblehead (7-0): Defending Northeastern Conference champions are stacked at the skill positions with quarterback Josh Robertson, tight end James Doody, running backs George Percy and Connor Cronin, wide receiver Craig Michalowski and lineman A.J. Andriano back. The linebacking corps is solid with Percy, Cronin and Liam McIlroy, along with Zander Danforth and Michalowski in the secondary and Andriano up front.

12. Marshfield (3-1): The Rams should be solid on defense as Aidan True and Sean McCarthy return on the line along with linebackers Matt McAlpine and Luke McAlpine and defensive backs Sam Sullivan, Quinn Sullivan and Casey Trodden in the secondary. On offense, quarterback Owen Masterson, wide receiver Pat Yesinko and linemen Ross Olinger and Matt McTiernan return.

13. Reading (6-1): All-Scholastic quarterback James Murphy has a good receiving nucleus back in tight end Patrick Duross and wide receivers Ryan Strout, Alex DiNapoli and Jesse Doherty. Colby Goodchild should be the featured back, while Thomas O’Brien leads the way in the trenches on both sides of the ball. J.P. Sullivan is back at linebacker and Aidan Bekkenhuis is a returning cornerback.

14. Milton (5-1): It doesn’t hurt to have All-Scholastic quarterback Chase Vaughan back along with lineman Isaiah Hassell, running back Amari Marsman and lineman Drew Cakouros on offense. Linebackers Matt Paquette and Marsman, defensive backs Owen McHugh and Vaughan along with lineman Hassell return on defense.

15. BC High (2-3): Ed Mantie comes over from Framingham and he will be greeted by seven returning starters. On offense, linemen John Garrett and John Curran, tight end Pat Gill, wide receiver Ben Evee and running back Brady Rice are back. Garrett will double on the defensive line, while Gill is an outside linebacker.

16. Natick (5-0): The Redhawks will be young on offense as linemen Aaron Becker and Jacob Snoeyink as well as receivers Jayson Little and David Seiche are the only returnees. On defense, the Redhawks will be led by Jake Adelmann and Nick Burgoyne at linebacker, Seiche and Little in the secondary and Ryan Lebrun and Becker in the trenches.
