Young chefs present culinary offerings at annual Sweet Potato Contest during Fair - Gulf Coast News Today

ROBERTSDALE — Seven culinary students from Baldwin County competed in the annual Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Sweet Potato Contest held Wednesday, Sept. 22 during the Baldwin County Fair at the Baldwin County Coliseum in Robertsdale.

Contestants included two in the junior division and five in the senior division.

“I just want you to support your community and support agriculture in Baldwin County,” said event coordinator Dawn Hopper.

Also participating in the event were Sarah Butterworth, 4-H Foundation Regional Extension Agent for Baldwin County with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES); and judges Rosellen Coggin, Cathy Banning and Mike McKenzie.

Winners were:

Junior Division: Chris Richardson, Central Baldwin Middle School, sweet potato and cream cheese icing layer cake; Julie Aguilar Diaz, Foley Middle, sweet potato empanadas.

Senior Division: Mackenzie Holcomb, Foley High, first place, sweet potato cheesecake; Mia Marshall, Elberta High, second, sweet potato cheesecake; Libby Doahey, South Baldwin Center for Technology, third, sweet potato cheesecake parfait; Margaret Premo, Daphne High, African sweet potato and peanut stew; and Jasmine Mullen, Robertsdale High, penne rigate with sweet potatoes.
