FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- An avid fan of podcasts, Gilles-Sweet Elementary School third-grade teacher Austin Fleischer is in the third year of offering his students the extracurricular opportunity to interview staff members.
“I started it because I was trying to think of new ways to get the kids involved with the creating process, how to do an interview, how to share documents and how to save audio,” said Fleischer, who, due to the pandemic, is this year’s virtual teacher districtwide for his grade level.
“I just thought that podcasts would be a cool, motivating way for students to put all of that together and show off some of their creative skills.”
After trial and error, the third-grade podcast using GarageBand ended up being posted on Soundcloud, which allows free upload.
“Now, I’m getting the kids more involved with the podcast,” Fleischer said. “They’re doing more editing and picking out what music to put at the beginning.”
Once or twice a month, Fleischer selects a student to complete the podcast project, which is not mandatory.
“It’s kind of like a bonus thing they can do,” Fleischer said. “All students will have the opportunity. Each podcast involves a different student interviewing a different person. Doing (this) virtually is a little bit more of a challenge currently right now, but I think we kind of figured that out.”
The most recent podcast features third-grader Layla Banks interviewing Gilles-Sweet Elementary School Principal Matt Krivak.
“I wanted to do the podcast because I wanted to interview Principal Krivak,” Layla said. “I wrote down the questions on my iPad with my mom. My favorite part of the podcast was writing down the questions.”
As for those questions, Krivak said he not only enjoyed being interviewed by Layla, but commended Fleischer’s ongoing podcast curriculum.
“Mr. Fleischer has hosted a class podcast for the past several years, and the students have really enjoyed the process of learning about a school or community figure,” Krivak said.
“It’s a great example of a classroom project that is highly engaging, but also incorporates the various learning domains of The Fairview Advantage.”
Not only do the student podcasters have to write out the questions and practice their interviewing skills, they’re now also included in the editing process.
“There are a lot of skills built in with a podcast,” Fleischer said. “They have to learn how to make it more of a conversation and how to put their own spin on certain things.”
So far, the podcast subjects have focused mainly on Gillis-Sweet Elementary School staff and community members. Fleischer said one of the recent highlights involved a student last year interviewing former Fairview Park Mayor Eileen Ann Patton out of her City Hall office.
“One of my students got to sit behind her desk in her office and conduct the interview,” Fleischer said. “That was really cool. I would love to be able to conduct interviews with more community members -- business owners, our new mayor, and police and fire chiefs. I’d like to start branching out.”
What about really upping the ante and having the kids interview rapper MGK or Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield?
“Trust me, they’ve asked plenty of times if they could interview a celebrity,” Fleischer said. “I say, if you can get a hold of them, we will set it up.”
