Dale, best known for her work on Pretty Little Liars and Heart of Dixie, agreed with Anderson's vision from the start. “We wanted it to be relatable," she says. "I think that's why it resonated with so many people. There's a little bit of elevated TV fashion, like espadrilles around the house or a closet full of flirty date-night dresses, but we tried to ground it in reality.”
One example: How Maddie wears actual sweatshirts and sweatpants in multiple episodes. “She's got three kids, she's a single mother, and she's not putting together these outfits we're seeing everywhere on Instagram,” Dale explains. “She's grabbing the closest pair of sweats or jeans and a cute T-shirt. It's comfort and realism.”
Helen’s shoes and Maddie’s dresses took up the most space in the wardrobe trailer.
Even though it was refreshing to see a more casual approach to TV fashion, there was still plenty to covet, like the fabulous summer dresses Maddie wore for date nights with Cal or the stilettos Helen wore to, well, just about anything in town. “In your 40s you have more disposable income, so I shopped a little higher-end brands—less Zara and more Nordstrom," Dale says. "And sustainable retailers." So it should come as no surprise to fans that Maddie's dresses and Helen's shoes took up the most space in the wardrobe trailer. “I would have to swap out Heather's shoes because they were overflowing," Dale says. “I'd take them back to the office in batches. She had a new shoe for every outfit, which was really fun.”
As for Maddie, Dale says there were "thousands and thousands of dollars worth of dresses" in the costume trailer. “Yellow is JoAnna's favorite color, so I'd look for pretty yellow things. It was also nice to dress her in pastels and florals to complement her beautiful red hair.”
So which outfits are Dale's favorites? “I loved Dana Sue in her polka-dot dress at the spa opening, because at the beginning of the show we mainly saw her in her chef's coat. I loved Maddie's LoveShackFancy minidress for her date with Cal. And I loved all of Helen's power suit moments, but the white embroidered Veronica Beard jacket might be my favorite. As soon as she put it on, I was like, ‘Yep, that’s it!'”
There’s a special meaning behind Serenity’s church.
During the early days, when Anderson and her team were scouting locations, she had a specific image of what she wanted the church on the show to look like but was having trouble finding one that fit her vision. Then, while driving though the Oakhurst neighborhood near Atlanta, she came across Oakhurst Presbyterian and pulled over. Once inside, she looked up at the stained glass windows and knew it was perfect for the fictional Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. “Above the altar was a Black Jesus, while the stained glass above the choir loft was a white Jesus, and that’s to commemorate the fact that it was the first integrated church in the area,” she says. Given how inclusive Serenity is, Anderson says it was a blessing they found the church and were given permission to film there. “It was just one more piece of the puzzle,” she says. “The first scene the three ladies shot together was the scene on the church lawn, where Annie takes the photo of them all.” Now that’s a good omen.
