I am relaxing on the deck and enjoying a slight breeze ruffling the branches of the large redwoods surrounding my airy cyber-hut. It is the last day of summer as I write this and we just had a glorious 1 1/4" of RAIN-YAY!! What a pleasure it was to hear actual dripping and then RAIN for much of Saturday. We are all hoping for an early wet winter.
At last month's meeting of the Cazadero Community Club (some of it on Zoom) we were offered the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radios and heard an update by Mike Nicholls and Tony Goodwin. For $15 we received a 2-watt radio, with easy instructions. As part of the Cazadero GMRS Network, each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. you may participate in the Roll Call. We excitedly listened to folks check-in from King Ridge Road and various locations in the canyon. After we made sure that the antenna remained vertical, we were heard and acknowledged-exciting! The purpose of this Network is to exchange info re neighborhood issues such as fire, sightings of wild animals (mountain lions, bobcats, etc.) hazards such as trees or powerlines down, and vehicular accidents blocking roads, etc. This is not to be used for gossip sessions! Check their website at www.cazgmrs.org/norcal or email cazgmrs@gmail.com for more information. If the 2-watt units do not work for you, check at Cazadero Supply for stronger equipment. I am very pleased that this vital communications link is easily available to us here in Cazadero.
I send my best wishes to the students and staff at the Montgomery Elementary School for a productive school year. Please call their office at 6325221 for info.
The successful roll-out of the Adopt-A-Highway by Caz Club members and other volunteers will be repeated, probably in early November. Look for info online and on the downtown electronic sign. Do volunteer to help, if possible, and of course DO NOT LITTER!
We are still hoping that the Annual Cazadero Holiday Crafts Fair will take place on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the fire hall. I fervently await my yearly banana cream pie, offered by the great bakers from the Community Church.
There will be another Occidental Flea Market on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Community Center on Bohemian Highway. This is a fundraiser for the installation of a public restroom in Occidental. Please call Leslie at 760-914-1989 to sign up. Lots of fun.
It is great to see (and drive on) the newly repaved area of Cazadero Highway, which will soon be finished. We greatly appreciate the ongoing efforts of Mike Nicholls, Supervisor Lynda Hopkins and others to finally remedy the dreadful road conditions, which have been endured for much too long.
As Autumn begins, take time to survey your home and property and secure outdoor buildings, etc. from the weather and unwanted animal visitors. The balmy weather that we usually experience in October will hopefully lead to a wet winter.
You may complete your home, garden and vehicular projects with a visit to Cazadero Supply, which features a myriad of products and expertise.
Raymond' Bakery's Friday Pizza and Music nights are popular and fun. Both the Cazadero and Duncans Mills General Stores offer daily groceries and many local wines, meat, fish and body care products. Gold Coast Coffee and Bakery and the Duncan's Mills Tea Shop supply a wonderful variety of tasty beverage choices. Cape Fear Cafe', in Duncans Mills cooks up delicious California/New Orleans-style repasts and Light Wave Cafe' in Monte Rio (by the skate park) is a great spot to hang out with your human and furry friends and enjoy tasty food, drinks and yummy baked goods.
Each first Wednesday of the month, the helpful volunteers from the Jenner Community Club assist the Redwood Empire Food Bank from 10-11 a.m. adjacent to the Jenner Sea Store. An assortment of fresh and canned foods will be placed directly in your vehicle.
Forest Unlimited is a great local nonprofit group and would appreciate your donations sent to P.O. Box 506, Forestville, Ca.95436. The wonderful Pole Mountain Fire Lookout (privately funded) is a valuable resource for early smoke detection. You may check out their website at www.polemountainlookout.org and also donate.
Happy October Birthdays and Anniversaries to all celebrants-mine is on Oct. 13! Celebrate and eat cake!
