CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sweet Moses, the old-fashioned ice-cream shop in Cleveland’s Gordon Square neighborhood, is closing.
The shop opened in March 2011 at 6800 Detroit Ave. Its name is derived from Moses Cleaveland, the city’s founder.
The owners posted on Facebook:
“We are saddened to let you know that Sweet Moses will be permanently closing. After over 10 years of creating traditional ice cream soda fountain favorites, our last scoop will be this Sunday, October 24th (as long as products are still available). Plans for Sweet Moses to transition to new owners have fallen through, leading to the difficult decision to close the shop.
“It’s been fun, exciting and fulfilling to make this dream come alive in the Gordon Square Arts District. We cannot thank our neighbors, customers and employees enough for your support and friendship since the very first day we opened.”
When it opened, The Plain Dealer’s Joe Crea called it “just the right addition to Gordon Square,” a throwback vibe in the neighborhood.
Walls were adorned with vintage posters and oversized postcards. Restored booths filled the space along with other old-time touches that included a vintage root-beer barrel and a grand 1940s-era soda fountain with 16-foot marble counter.
It featured house-made classic flavors of ice cream, cookies, brownies and chocolates, along with white cheddar popcorn and caramel corn.
In 2015, Sweet Moses opened a concession stand in Progressive Field. It was part of a right-field local culinary enclave that included Great Lakes Brewing Co., Dynomite Burgers, Melt and Barrio stands.
