(Oct. 28, 2021) The fall harvest is expanding by the week. A particular favorite ingredient of mine, fingerling-like sweet potatoes – maybe the runts of the harvest – have been showing up at the market for the past few weeks.
You know, of course, that sweet potatoes aren’t really potatoes. They are root vegetables, and while not botanically related to the common potato they share the same naming source. Good old Christopher Columbus’ crew were the first Europeans to taste the tubers and called them batata, the Spanish word for potato. And they were sweet.
Sweet potatoes are a closer relative of the morning glory. Have you been successful in growing a vine from a sweet potato that actually flowers?
My habit is to pick up a whole farmers’ market selection of products, bring them home and then figure how to prepare them.
