TV Q&A: What happened to Marisa Tomei's role in 'Sweet Girl'? - TribLIVE

Trib Total Media TV writer Rob Owen answers reader questions every Wednesday at TribLive.com in a column that also appears in the Sunday Tribune-Review.

Q: Word is that Marisa Tomei was fired from the movie “Sweet Girl” as she was a difficult diva. Truth to that is the fact that scenes she shot were redone with another actress. Why is there no information online about what happened. Is it the industry, once again, covering up for their own?

— Dave via email

Rob: There’s coverage of recasting on many, many TV shows/movies so it’s difficult to see a pattern of the industry “protecting its own.” Do they always put out a press release saying someone was released for bad behavior when that is truly the case? Of course not, but no industry does that unless there’s a public kerfluffle.

In this case though, the recasting flew completely under the radar. Tomei was announced as joining the “Sweet Girl” cast in December 2019 . Dave is correct that there was no coverage of Tomei getting replaced on “Sweet Girl” by actress Amy Brenneman but his rationale for the recasting is off.

Tomei was not replaced mid-production, which is what would happen if she was being replaced due to behavior issues. She was replaced a year after filming in Pittsburgh wrapped.

No studio spends extra money to re-shoot scenes to punish an ill-behaved performer. An ill-behaved performer wouldn’t care if they reshot scenes with a different actor because the difficult actor would already have been paid.

But a studio will spend thousands of dollars to reshoot scenes because an actor delivered a performance that does not mesh with what the director envisioned or if they think they can improve a film or TV show with a different actor in the part.

Tomei did shoot her scenes for “Sweet Girl” in Pittsburgh. Those scenes were re-shot in January 2021 in Los Angeles with Brenneman playing the part of the Pennsylvania politician. It’s fair to assume that whatever Tomei delivered in her take on the character was not what the filmmakers wanted but that’s all about performance and doesn’t prove (or disprove) difficult behavior no matter what the rumor mill might say.

Q: Watched “Sweet Girl” last night and some of the Pittsburgh shots were the best we’ve ever seen. You were right, it wasn’t “great” but as popcorn movies go we gave it a B. And we LOVED the plot twist!

Still trying to figure out what event could have been going on at PNC Park so late in the year that it snowed.

— Bob via Facebook

Rob: If we strain credulity and imagine the Pirates in the MLB playoffs, those games ended on Oct. 27, 2020. The earliest snow recorded in Pittsburgh fell on Oct. 18, 1972, so it could conceivably have been a Pirates game.

Q: I’m curious about Pirates coverage: Is Greg Brown doing all the TV games? In the past, it seemed that announcing “teams” alternated.

— Steven, Titusville

Rob: Brown is not offering play-by-play for every game but shares duties with Joe Block, similar to how the analysts alternate. Through Aug. 24, Block covered games on Aug. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Q: By now I’ve heard that Channel 11 News will begin at 4 p.m. on Sept. 13. Is “Judge Judy” going to be aired at a different time or on a different TV station (and at what time on another station, if so?), or will it be removed altogether?

— Ronell, Mt. Pleasant

Rob: Technically, “Judge Judy” is over. No new episodes are being made but Judy Sheindlin is starring in a new judge show – basically same show, different title (that’s yet to be announced) — that will debut later this year on streaming service IMDb TV.

Reruns of the original “Judge Judy” will continue to air on Channel 11, shifting to 3 and 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 13. The show provided a good lead-in to WPXI’s 5 p.m. news so station execs are clearly hoping it will do the same for the new 4 p.m. newscast.
