APPLETON, Wis. — A school record was tied as the Finlandia University football team (0-1) lost 42-6 to Lawrence (1-0), Saturday afternoon at the Banta Bowl.
Lawrence got off to a quick start scoring 20 points in the first 16 minutes of the game. With 11:39 to go in the fourth quarter, freshman Fernando Monroe fired an 8-yard scoring pass to freshman Byron Owens.
Defensively, Finlandia shut down the run giving up just seven yards on the ground. That tied the school record set on Oct. 31, 2015 against Maranatha Baptist. The Lions finished with nine tackles for a loss and five sacks. Freshman Jesse Hill had 13 tackles to lead the way.
Finlandia opens the home season, Saturday, Sept. 11, vs. Concordia-Chicago. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
