The sweet spiritual nourishment of God's word - Leawood - Church of the Resurrection

Recently, all the places I’ve been to and most of the people I’ve encountered have seemed very stressed. There’s a lot of tension everywhere, and it feels as if we’re repeating so much of the uncertainty and resulting anxiety from March 2020 through January 2021, except just in a matter of a few weeks. The world is grieving. Or rather, the world did grieve and now it's bracing itself for yet another impact, to repeat the cycle.

We’ve been through this before, but now it seems that no one knows exactly where to turn. In the past year or more, there’s been a ton of research done, but much of it seems to conflict. Masks vs. no masks, vaccine vs. no vaccine, sending kids to school or not, political parties tearing each other down--no matter where we look there doesn’t seem to be really any good news. Both (or more) sides of any of these arguments believe they have good, supporting evidence for why they believe what they believe. It’s to the point that I don’t know if anyone knows exactly what to believe, so the best we can do is to subscribe to the side that gives us hope.

And that hope is good. But may I suggest finding hope in the very uncertainty that we’re trying to escape. My wife and I have been watching a new show, “Ted Lasso.” It’s a really heart-warming show with so many good lessons about how to just be kind to one another. In the episode we watched last night, Ted Lasso said to his team, “There is something worse out there than being sad, and that is being alone and being sad.” He went on to encourage his team to live in the sadness together, and then move onward and forward from there.

Another great place to find hope and common ground? The Psalms. They are filled with songs of lament, where the Biblical authors went through really hard things and cried out to God for solace. So in this time of tension, let down your guard, let someone know you’re standing with them, no matter their beliefs, and find ways to move forward together.
