Jason Momoa takes on Big Pharma and fatherhood in Sweet Girl, Netflix’s new action thriller movie. But apart from starring Aquaman, it’s also memorable for its major twist ending.

Directed by Brian Andrew Mendoza, Sweet Girl stars Momoa as a man named Nick, who seeks revenge against BioPrime, the pharmaceutical company he believes let his wife Amanda die of cancer after pulling a life-saving drug off the market. He soon gets sucked into a larger conspiracy in his quest, aided by his ass-kicking teenage daughter Rachel (Isabela Merced).

We’ve got everything you need to know about the ending of Sweet Girl — but you’ve been warned, spoilers ahead.

What happens in the end of Sweet Girl? Sweet Girl ending, explained:

Most of Sweet Girl takes place two years after Amanda’s death, as Ray and Rachel fight to avenge her. Eventually, the father-daughter duo finally make it to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to confront Diana Morgan (Amy Brenneman), the senator behind BioPrime’s evil practices.

But during the big climax, the pair’s FBI insider, Sarah Meeker (Lex Scott Davis) reveals that Ray has actually been dead for the majority of the movie. An early action sequence in which a hitman named Amos Santos (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) severely injured Ray and Rachel actually resulted in Ray’s death, leaving Rachel to imagine his presence throughout the remainder of the film.

After Meeker drops this bombshell, the film replays scenes that originally portrayed Ray killing bad guys, with Rachel now in his place. In the end, she gets revenge by killing Santos and forcing Morgan to confess to her ties to BioPrime.

After sending a tape of Morgan’s confession to Meeker, Rachel boards a plane to jet off somewhere unknown, having brought her parents’ killers to justice.

Will there be a Sweet Girl sequel?

No official news about a Sweet Girl sequel has been made yet. However, in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Mendoza said he and his crew would return to the city — where most of the movie was filmed — “in a heartbeat” if a sequel got green-lit.

Sweet Girl received largely negative reviews from critics, but a follow-up film isn’t out of the question if it performs well enough on Netflix.

Is Sweet Girl based on a true story?

No, Sweet Girl is a work of fiction. However, its premise draws on the real-life issue of how health care being politicized in the United States.

“I don’t think health care should ever be politicized,” Merced said in a recent interview, adding, “It’s a very tricky situation, but if we address it in [a potential] sequel, more people would start caring about it.”
