‘The Crown’: Watch Emma Corrin’s Sweet, Cringey ‘Phantom of the Opera’ Performance - Vanity Fair

The Emmy nominee sings all of “All I Ask of You”—not just 16 bars—in this deleted scene from season four.

If, perchance, you wanted to kickstart your week by watching an industry darling delicately sing a musical theater staple, then you’re in luck. On Monday, Netflix dropped a deleted scene from season four of The Crown that finds Emmy nominee Emma Corrin, in character as Princess Diana, singing the entirety of “All I Ask Of You” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical The Phantom of the Opera.

The Crown fans most likely remember the scene from the most recent season in which Corrin’s Lady Di films herself performing the duet as a solo number, and gifts the tape to her husband, Josh O’Connor’s Prince Charles. Unfortunately for Diana, Charles finds her gift of song to be more cringe-worthy than swoon-worthy, straining their marriage even further. (The secondhand embarrassment of the whole thing only gets worse when you learn that this actually happened.)

Thank goodness Netflix has taken it upon itself to release the full 4 minute and 16 second video showing Princess Diana serenading her sad sack husband. The clip begins with a languid Diana lying alone on her bed, before she gets restless and pops in the VHS of her performance. We’re then transported to the West End production of The Phantom of the Opera, where Diana takes the stage, donning her finest Christine Daaé seafoam green hooded cape.

Unsurprisingly, Corrin is no Sarah Brightman, the actress who originated the role of Christine on Broadway. But the actor definitely delivers a performance that feels in line with how the People’s Princess would tackle the song, delicate and sweet. Big props to the actors portraying the nervous-but-encouraging cast of Phantom as well, sending positive energy (and slightly underwhelmed facial expressions) from the wings as they watch Lady Di put her heart on her sleeve. Kudos, too, to Corrin for optioning down instead of attempting the big soprano note at the end of the song; we imagine Diana probably would have made a similarly tasteful choice, given her own vocal ability.

Is the whole thing kind of awkward? Absolutely. But Corrin, like Princess Di, gets an A for effort, and an A-plus for emotional vulnerability. Prince Charles could never.
