Bakery Opening Alert
Sweet bun bakery Cranky Granny’s Sweet Rolls opened a physical location in Austin as of May 29 up in the Domain, as reported by Community Impact. The 10910 Domain Drive, Suite 106 shop serves up sweet rolls topped with various ingredients such as peach cobbler, chocolate peanut butter, the simple classic, and a vegan version. There are also sweet roll sundaes with ice cream, whipped cream, and cherries. Founder and owner Sianni Dean started the business as an at-home bakery service in New Jersey, and relocated to Austin in 2020 with the goal of opening the bakery. Check its Instagram account for updated hours.
Prebiotics Soda Pop-Up
Local prebiotics soda company Mayawell opened a pop-up cafe this summer. Moment by Mayawell is found at 2609 East Cesar Chavez Street as of June 7. The cafe will serve the brand’s beverages, matcha iterations, and cocktails, alongside coffee from truck Lady Elaine, natural wines selected by the Meteor, ciders from Fairweather, and grab-and-go food from Blenders & Bowls, Gati Ice Cream, and Lucky Lime. The space will feature art installations, murals, a shop with goods from local vendors such as Clay Imports and Garden Seventeen, and a patio. Plus there will be events ranging from seminars, runs, cycling, gardening and mixology demonstrations. It will remain open for four months; hours aren’t known.
Food Truck Expansion
Food truck Asador Tacos opened a new physical location along Rainey Street in early May. It took over the restaurant space that had previously housed L’Estelle House at downtown bar the Drafting Room. The 88 1/2 Rainey Street restaurant serves up tacos (brisket to cauliflower chorizo), queso, guacamole, and aguas frescas. It’s open for takeout and on-site services. Chef Joe Becerra’s truck operates two other truck locations: the original at downtown bar Las Perlas and another at West Sixth bar Buford’s.
Austin Bartender Profile
Drink.Well bartender and co-creator of Asian cocktail pop-up Daijoubu Caer Maiko was profiled in drinks publication Punch this month. She spoke about how she and co-creator Sharon Yeung sought out to highlight and emphasize Asian-Americans in the drinks world, her favorite Austin bar (Small Victory), and shared recipes behind three cocktails, including the popular Dope Ass Midori Sour.
Ghost Kitchen Lineup
Commercial kitchen Prep ATX released its tenant lineup recently for its 1300 East Anderson Lane, Building D space. On deck are Austin food businesses such as Brooklyn Breakfast Shop, Tiny Pies, Taste of Home Dumplings, Fresh Fronks, Lulu’s Pie Shop, and much more. Some of the occupants will sell their food out of the kitchen hub, which will include an on-site patio in the Heritage Hills neighborhood. The establishment is aiming to open this summer.
Salad Chain Expansion
National fancy salad chain Sweetgreen is opening its third Austin location at some point soon. It’ll be found in downtown Austin at 200 West Second Street. Its first two locations are found on South Congress and on the Drag.
Charitable Texas Wine
Hye, Texas winery William Chris Vineyards is embarking on a new wine benefitting hunger relief organization Feeding Texas. The Wanderer Series Relief Project II is created with Emmer & Rye wine director and sommelier Ali Schmidt. The resulting $24 bottle is a red blend consisting of 92 percent cinsault and eight percent carignan grapes sourced from the Texas High Plains. The wines are available through the winery’s website, as well as most major retailers in the state, including H-E-B and local bottle shops.
Pride Cookie Special
San Antonio-based Bakery Lorraine created a rainbow cookie in honor of Pride Month, where partial proceeds will go towards likewise-San Antonio-based LGBTQ nonprofit Thrive Youth Center. It’s available in packs of three cookies for $6.50 at all locations (San Antonio, Austin) as of June 5 through the end of the month.
Barbecue Sauce Burgers
Austin burger chain P. Terry’s teamed up with Stubb’s Bar-B-Q Sauce (read: not Stubb’s the barbecue restaurant) to create a special barbecue bacon burger. The burger consists of two Angus beef patties, cheddar cheese, bacon, grilled onions, and Stubb’s smoky mesquite sauce. The burger, which is available now, will be sold for an undetermined limited time.
Texas Wine Awards
Texas Hill Country wineries won 98 medals at this year’s TEXSOM International Wine Awards. Two received judge selection medals: Spicewood Vineyards’s Battle of Toro 2017 and William Chris Vineyards’s Roussanne La Pradera 2020.
Salon Beer Collaboration
Birds Barbershop created a new beer with local brewery Independence Brewing as part of the salon chain’s 15th birthday celebration. The Birds Anniversary Lager is available at all locations of the salon for on-site imbibing.
