BLOOMINGTON (HOI) - A smoothie and juice bar in Downtown Bloomington aims to bring sweet treats and healthy eating together.
The Energy Hut makes low sugar, low carb meal replacement shakes with vitamins and protein between 200 and 250 calories a piece.
And the owner Jena Garrett said she's proof it can work.
A fitness enthusiast, Garrett started drinking the shakes after she had her daughter 4 years ago. Garrett said she lost 30 pounds and from there, decided to combine her passion for fitness with a love of community building.
"It really has been something I've been able to share with her and want to share that with other moms, parents, community members who are looking for a sweet treat but not adding those extra calories and extra sugar," Garrett said.
Customers can find all kinds of teas, smoothies, and lattes on the menu. Flavors range from strawberry to chocolate to cake batter and vegan friendly options are available.
"I have four kids, so I do a lot of caffeine," said customer Ashley Stevenson. "So any more natural, healthier alternatives, I'm all about that."
Aside from being the owner, Garrett is the only employee and knows this has been a tough time. She said she looks to expand to bring in more people and provide more customer service.
"I had no idea how to start a business like this until I started to ask questions and to ask for them, that was a big thing too," Garrett said. "Asking for help and support and I received that ten fold."
Resident Jeff Stovall said he is thrilled to have a new small business in the city.
"Bloomington-Normal is looking for people to come and to have their businesses," Stovall said. "My son just opened a new business here. It's good to keep the businesses in the community. Small businesses makes a difference."
The Energy Hut is located on the first floor of Fox and Hound Salon and Spa.
