Clad in a deep thistle-colored blazer over an ecru lace dress, a golden crown on her head and adorned with a sash declaring her “100 & Fabulous,” Vacaville’s Xanthia Warren held court at Cornerstone Assisted Living and was feted for her 100th birthday.
Smiling and waving, she enjoyed the speeches and music and presentation from her spot at the entrance to Cornerstone atop her topiary-flanked throne, a comfortably-padded chair.
“It’s a blessing to have her here and a blessing to celebrate her,” explained Twila Jackson, a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sister.
Jackson said she’s known Warren, widow of Air Force Lt. Colonel James Warren, a Tuskeegee Airman, for 16 years and the sweet woman has always been deeply involved in the community.
Dr. Olivia Stringer, also a sorority sister, agreed.
In a reading of her Warren’s history, Stringer revealed that the centenarian who grew up in Missouri and graduated in 1938 as class valedictorian was all about education. She received a bachelor’s degree in 1942, a master’s degree in 1991 and would later become an educator, including in Solano County for about 32 years.
With her husband, she raised two sons, James and Stewart. Meanwhile, she also joined her beloved sorority in 1939.
She has been a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for 81 years and is a charter member of the local chapter, Solano Valley.
She is also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an international organization of women teachers; the Retired Teachers Association; American Association of University Women; Bethany Lutheran Church; and the Lee A. Archer Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.
In her honor, her sorority named a scholarship for her, the Solano Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc Xanthia Warren Scholarship.
Giving his mom a kiss. Dwayne Warren shared memories of their lives.
“She was always the spirit and anchor of the house,” he said, remembering her ready smiles and joy. “She is an angel on this earth.”
Nancy Warren, her daughter-in-law, spoke about love.
“She just has an open heart,” Nancy said. “She always has a smile for you.”
Sorority sisters later sang the Delta Sigma Theta Sweetheart Song, and the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity serenaded the birthday girl with their Sweetheart Song.
Xanthia smiled in delight, and was later presented roses by the attendees and blew out a candle on her cake.
“It’s a fabulous day that I really appreciated,” she later shared. “This is really special.”
