By the time the Greenville Drive throw their first pitch of the 2021 season on May 4 at Fluor Field, it will have been 20 months since they played an inning there.
But before Drive fans settle back in to the old traditions – before all the hot dogs, draft beer and seventh inning stretches – they’ll need to embrace a few new ones.
To begin with, the Drive will be operating under guidelines created in coordination with Major League Baseball as well as state and local officials, which include:
- Masks must be worn at all times in the ballpark
- Ticket sales will be capped at a 50% capacity, which fills 2,200 of 4,500 fixed seats
- Black zip ties will be put in place on seats to ensure social distancing
- Instead of audience participation, most entertainment content will be filmed in advance and shown during the game
- Drive mascot Reedy Rip’It will be participating in socially distanced photo ops instead of interacting directly with the crowd
Attendees will be encouraged to use different entrances based on where they will be sitting in the stadium. For example, season ticket holders will be asked to come in through the Front Porch entrance.
In addition, the Drive has a clear bag policy in place and is switching to digital tickets to expedite entry.
“For over 14 years, our biggest concern between Craig, Jeff (Brown) and myself was weather,” Greenville Drive general manager Eric Jarinko said. “Whether a game was going to get rained out. As we head into 2021, that looks a little different. The safety of the community, our staff, players and coaches is our number one priority as we head into the 2021 season.”
Fans will also be encouraged to use contactless payment methods or the app Seats to order food to have it delivered to their seat. However, concession stands will have plexiglass dividers in place between stations and social distancing markers on the ground to ensure safety while taking in-person orders.
Another change this season is how ticketing and seating will work. These changes include:
- No one will be seated in the first two rows of each section
- The Green Monster area must be purchased in pods of four tickets
- Fixed seats within the stadium will be sold as general admission tickets with sections 105-111 reserved for season ticket holders
- Ushers will seat attendees to ensure social distancing
- Tickets will be sold one month at a time with May tickets going on sale on April 17
“Last year was difficult and extraordinarily challenging for all of us,” said Greenville Drive owner Craig Brown. “It makes our ability to come together today even more special. The opening for baseball season this year is sweeter because of what we’ve been through.”
As the season moves forward, the Drive’s management expects the protocols to evolve.
