Syracuse, N.Y. — A man safely escaped from a burning home early Monday morning on Syracuse’s North Side.

None of the firefighters who fought the smoky blaze in the bitter cold were injured.

The Syracuse Fire Department rushed to 241 Dale St. at 1:53 a.m. and found the back of the two-story home engulfed in flames. A resident — the only person home at the time of the fire — had called 911 after he smelled smoke, firefighters said.

The man escaped uninjured before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters faced tough conditions while putting out the fire.

The inside of the one-family home hot and filled with thick smoke that made it impossible for firefighters to see, the fire department said. Outside the burning house, it was 13 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

It took 30 minutes to fully put out the fire. The cause is under investigation.

In addition to firefighters, the Syracuse Police Department, the American Red Cross and National Grid responded to the fire.

The home — built in 1920 — is still standing. But the fire left the back of the residence is charred.

Firefighters reminded Syracuse residents to shovel snow away from the hydrants on and near their property.
